The Integrated Passenger Information System (IPIS) is a centrally-fed computer based information system that manages transmission of audio and visual information to passengers through interactive voice responses, announcements and displays, spanning the entire railway station, with possibilities of networking and operation from a centralized location.
System Architecture
The key components of IPIS system are:
- Central Data Controller (CDC)
- Platform Data Controller (PDC)
- Multi-Line-Display Board (MLDB)
- At-a-glance Display Board (AGDB)
- Platform Display Board (PDB)
- Coach Guidance Display Board
- Pre-Recorded Announcement
In an IPIS, the Central Data Controller (CDC) is the heart of the system. The CDC essentially consists of the workstation CPU connected to a display monitor and peripheral devices through a control switch. This serves as the central data entry point for the all visual and audio communications to spread across the span of the railway station.
The communication between the CPU and audio visual devices is managed by means of a Central Data Switch (CDS), which is a level-3 Ethernet switch. The audio/visual selection switch allows the operator to monitor seamless switchover between audio and visual information transmission.
The CDC is connected to platform data controller (PDC) through the CDS via optical fibre or Ethernet port. The PDC drives the downstream display devices like the platform display boards and coach guidance display boards. At a time, a PDC can handle two platforms.
The recording and playback of audio messages is possible only through the CDC, to which microphone and speaker is connected using a Windows standard sound recording tool.
